On Monday, April 17, 2006, Common Wolf gave birth at Tama Zoo, following a similar event the previous year! The mother is "Moro" and the father is "Lobo." Both were born at Moscow Zoo.
This time, we attempted natural breeding, so the birth took place in the enclosure. Therefore, the number of offspring and their sexes are unknown. The mother has also been observed carrying her offspring in her mouth. The photo on the right is of last year's babies. Last year (2005), five babies were born on March 22nd: two males and three females.
Common Wolf is a subspecies of Common Wolf and is distributed in central and northern Europe and Siberia. In Japan, Common Wolf was found in Hokkaido, but it became extinct around 1900.
This species is famous for its "howling," which is a way of declaring its territory. At Tama Zoo, this behavior can be observed when the park opens, and the park has captured this on video and made it public. Please see
the video released in September 2003 on Tokyo Zoo Net BB.
