I'm sharing Red-headed Wood Pigeon!
└─2009/12/10

Red-headed Wood Pigeon is an endangered species that inhabits the Ogasawara Islands. Tama Zoo began raising Red-headed Wood Pigeon in 2007 and has been working on their conservation and breeding. We are now pleased to announce the public display of three of the pigeons that have been bred!

Release date: December 11, 2009 (Friday)

Individuals to be made public
1. Hatched on April 15, 2009, male.
2. Hatched on June 17, 2009, female.
3. Hatched on August 24, 2009, female.

Prior to Tama Zoo, Ueno Zoo had been working on the protection and breeding of Red-headed Wood Pigeon since 2001.

On December 1, 2007, one male and one female were moved from Ueno Zoo to Tama Zoo. Another male and female were moved on August 21, 2008. The female moved in 2007 and the male moved in 2008 mated and laid eggs, but the female abandoned incubation midway, so the care of the chicks was entrusted to a male and female Japanese Wood Pigeon, a closely related species.

Publication location
The Junglefowl enclosure (near the monkey mountain) in the Asian Tama Zoo Asian Zone.

Tama Zoo is exhibiting the three Japanese Wood Pigeons mentioned above to raise awareness about Red-headed Wood Pigeon, which has become less common for various reasons. In addition to these three, Tama Zoo is also keeping four other birds—parents, one male, and one female—in a non-public facility for breeding purposes.
