Updated August 18, 2024:The baby's gender has been determined to be female. Her name is "Sachi." We took the character "幸" from her father's name, "Kokichi," and, like her mother's name, "Maru," wrote it in hiragana to make "Sachi."
We would like to inform you that Water Buffalo was born at Tama Zoo on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at approximately 6:09 PM.
The sex is unknown.
The mother is "Maru" (born in 2013), and the father is "Kokichi" (born in 2018). This marks the first time in 38 years, since 1986, that we have successfully raised Water Buffalo at our zoo.
Maru is diligently taking care of her pup, including breastfeeding and licking it, and both mother and child are doing well.
