Current Asian Elephant enclosure and new location
(The new Asian Elephant enclosure is located within the construction area.)
backgroundCurrently, Anura has a good appetite and regularly experiences musto (a physiological phenomenon unique to male elephants), indicating he is in very good health. However, he is estimated to be 64 years old and is getting older.
The new Asian Elephant enclosure is under construction, aiming for completion in the spring of 2020.
Construction notices can be found here. However, the indoor exhibit is complete and provides a good environment. Therefore, we have decided that it would be preferable for Anura to move to the new Asian Elephant enclosure as soon as possible and while she is still healthy.
After Anura moves to the new Asian Elephant enclosure, you will not be able to see her for a while, but we plan to make her available for viewing via monitor in the near future. We will announce the decision on when she will be available on the monitor on our website.
Please note that 12-year-old Amara (female) and 10-year-old Vidura (male) can continue to be seen in the current Asian Elephant enclosure.
*About Musto
This mainly refers to a period when their temperament becomes fierce and they become aggressive. In Anura's case, this occurs twice a year.
Outwardly, symptoms may include secretions from glands located next to the eyes, and constant dripping of urine, leaving the inside of the hind legs wet.
Animal care status at Tama Zoo (as of September 28, 2017)3 animals (2 males, 1 female) *This includes "Anura," who will be moving this time.
In Japan as a whole, a total of 12 zoos (5 males and 7 females) are kept at seven facilities, including Tama Zoo.
