As previously announced, Chimpanzee named "Kei" (female, 38 years old) arrived at Tama Zoo from Tobu Zoo on June 6, 2017. Because Kei was raised by hand, she had little time to spend with other Chimpanzee and therefore had very few opportunities to learn how to interact Chimpanzee.

Since arriving at Tama Zoo, Kei has been kept in a private facility. She is repeatedly undergoing introductions and cohabitation practice with carefully selected members of the group, learning the rules of social behavior, such as how to greet others as Chimpanzee.

It took Kei about a year and a half to get to know Decky (male, estimated 41 years old) and Sakura (female, 9 years old) and live together. Now, Miru (female, 16 years old) has joined them, and the four are practicing living together. Step by step, little by little, they are steadily building trust with each other.

Therefore, on Monday, January 21, 2019, we will be making Kei's first public appearance in the indoor exhibit. Because she needs to undergo repeated cohabitation training with other individuals, opportunities for Kei to appear in the indoor exhibit will be very limited for the time being. In the future, we will initially put her in the indoor exhibit only on weekdays, and then, depending on Kei's condition, we plan to make her available on weekends and holidays as well.

Kei can sometimes show signs of nervousness and may throw tantrums when excited. Please refrain from using flash photography in the indoor exhibit area. Thank you for your cooperation.
