A male Giraffe calf was born at Tama Zoo on September 26, 2020. His name is "Gigi".
The mother is "Yulia" (born August 6, 2011 Tama Zoo), and the father is "Jill" (born May 22, 2013 at Saitama Children's Zoo and Nature Park, arrived at Tama Zoological Park on June 29, 2015). This is the 190th litter born at Tama Zoo.
Yulia became a little restless after noon on September 26th, but when she returned to her room, she foraged and sat around as usual.
Nighttime observation video confirmed that labor began around 9 PM and the baby was born at 11:41 PM. The baby stood up 40 minutes later. Yulia was very calm and was recorded nursing the baby every hour and caring for the baby throughout the night.
Baby Gigi has a standard build, with a head height of about 170 cm. A distinctive feature is the white hairs mixed in with the tufts of fur on her tail.
Currently, during the daytime, we let them out into a small enclosure so they can see the group through the fence. Once they get used to the environment, we plan to return the mother and calf to the group.
