In response to a request for cooperation from the Ministry of the Environment, Tokyo Zoological Park Society began breeding two species of land snails endemic to the Ogasawara Islands that are endangered (Land Snail and Land Snail) in September 2017 (
Announcement regarding the start of breeding can be found here).
Tama Zoo was in charge of raising Land Snail, and in 2018, the hatching of eggs was confirmed (
see here for the announcement of successful breeding). Since then, they have continued to raise the snails according to a breeding plan that takes genetic diversity into consideration, and have also been making preparations for exhibiting them.
This June marks the 10th anniversary of the Ogasawara Islands' designation as a World Natural Heritage site. We hope that through Land Snail, a species endemic to the Ogasawara Islands, people will become more aware of the importance of protecting Ogasawara's land snails and its natural environment.
Exhibition begins June 4, 2021 (Friday) (9:30 AM - 4:30 PM daily)
Location: Insectarium, Main Building, 2nd Floor (dedicated area)
Everyone is required to reserve a numbered ticket in advance to enter the park.
