On August 9, 2022, Sazanka, a Giraffe giraffe at Tama Zoo passed away. Sazanka was a female born at Tama Zoo on November 23, 1999. She was 22 years old.

This individual was the oldest in the group at our zoo.
Recently, due to her advanced age, the movement of her leg joints had become poor, and her movements were slow. We had been taking care of Sazanka while monitoring her health, such as letting her stay indoors on hot days.
On the morning of August 9th, the animal was found collapsed in its enclosure and, unfortunately, was confirmed dead. The cause of death was asphyxiation due to aspiration.

Following Sazanka's death, the number of Giraffe kept at our zoo has decreased to 17 (10 males and 7 females).
