Tama Zoo had suspended exhibiting Grevy's Zebra in March 2025. However, they have now introduced two new zebras from
Kyoto City Zoo and will resume keeping them in African Zone 's "Eurasian Moorhen Area."

Based on the management plan of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, our zoo is working with other zoos and aquariums to breed Grevy's Zebra. With the aim of further breeding, we have decided to accept Nanato and Mindy on a breeding loan*.
Our zoo's Eurasian Moorhen Area was renovated in the spring of 2025, but during construction work, Grevy's Zebra that had been kept in a temporary facility within the zoo died, resulting in the cessation of its exhibit. With this move, we aim to resume the exhibit of Grevy's Zebra and contribute to the formation of a herd through breeding and the maintenance of captive populations in Japan.
※About breeding loans
This is an animal loan agreement for the purpose of breeding. By transferring animals between zoos, the purpose is to form new pairs and contribute to breeding.
About the release of Nana
After arriving at the zoo, they will be quarantined in Domestic Horse and oryx enclosure for a while. After the quarantine is over, they will be gradually accustomed to their new environment and will be exhibited together with Giraffe, Scimitar-horned Oryx, and Great White Pelican in Eurasian Moorhen area.
We will announce the release date as soon as it is decided.

It will be available to view in Eurasian Moorhen area from Thursday, December 18, 2025.
*During the quarantine period and until the animals get used to their new enclosures, they will be exhibited in the sub-paddock adjacent to the animal enclosures, rather than in the large enclosure where Giraffe are. We ask for your understanding that it may be difficult to see for a while.
Added January 14, 2026: Regarding release
On Wednesday, January 14, 2026 (a closed day), Nanato was released into the large enclosure, where she began living together with Giraffe and Scimitar-horned Oryx.
Starting Thursday, January 15th, you can see a three-species exhibit of Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, and Scimitar-horned Oryx living together in Eurasian Moorhen area.
*Due to cleaning work being done in the large enclosure, the three species coexistence exhibition will be held until around 3:00 p.m.
