At Tokyo Sea Life Park, a King Penguin chick was born to "Sora" and "Ray" on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 (see
here for the birth announcement). The chick was named "Roy," which means "king" in French.
Roi appeared in the outdoor exhibit area on Thursday, November 7th. Although already the same size as its parents, it is covered in the fluffy brown feathers characteristic of a young bird, and has been observed begging its parents for food with a loud, high-pitched voice.
King Penguin move to air-conditioned indoor rooms around May when temperatures rise, for refuge from the heat and for breeding. So, this is your only chance to observe them in this state. Be sure to come and meet "Roi" soon!
*Added on July 5, 2020: Roi has been determined to be female through genetic testing.
