Let's play in the animal playground [16] The secret of spiderwebs
└─2014/10/17

As autumn deepens, the "Animal Plaza" at Inokashira Park Zoo becomes filled with the nests of a certain creature. That creature is—spiders. Most spiders that inhabit Japan become adults between September and November, so this is the best time to observe them.

The most striking feature is the webs of the golden orb-weaver spider. They are currently spun all over the plaza. If you walk around without paying attention, you're almost guaranteed to stick your face in one of them.

Spiderwebs are a common sight, not just in the animal park, but have you ever touched one with your finger? Spiderwebs consist of horizontal threads that trap insects and vertical threads that support the web, and you can easily feel the difference by touching them.

The horizontal threads, which are spun in a spiral pattern, have sticky substances called "mucospheres" secreted by spiders to catch insects, and they stick to your fingers when you touch them. In contrast, the vertical threads do not stick to your fingers at all. Also, the vertical threads are thick and very strong.

Currently, you can touch spiderwebs to your heart's content at the animal plaza. Some people are initially uninterested, but those who touch them are always amazed. Experience this incredible feeling for yourself by trying it with your own fingers.

* "Let's Play at the Animal Plaza" is held every Sunday from 11:00 to 12:00 from April to October, but from November to March of the following year, it will only be held on the second Sunday of each month (the time remains the same: 11:00 to 12:00).
