An autopsy conducted on May 27th revealed that the cause of death of Hanako, Asian Elephant who died at Inokashira Park Zoo on May 26th, 2016, was respiratory failure caused by pulmonary congestion resulting from prolonged lying down.

Hanako's remains will be donated to the National Museum of Nature and Science and used for research purposes.
