The special exhibition "Amphibians and Reptiles in Daily Life from a Folklore Perspective—Folklore × Herpetology" will reopen on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.

special exhibition titled "Folklore × Herpetology" to introduce Japanese amphibians and reptiles from a cultural perspective.

ContentSince ancient times, the Japanese have strived to coexist with nature. This coexistence included amphibians and reptiles that inhabit Japan. They have been incorporated into the lives of the Japanese in various forms, including faith, medicine, and literature.
This special exhibition will focus on the cultural aspects of Japanese life and introduce native amphibians and reptiles. The venue will feature common amphibians and reptiles that can be seen in Japan, as well as the nationally designated natural monument, the "Iwakuni White Snake" (*).
Some cultures have faded away, while others continue to be passed down through generations. Let's explore amphibians and reptiles in our daily lives from various perspectives.
(*) White snake of Iwakuni
In Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, many albino Japanese Ratsnake rat snakes are observed, and these have been designated as a national natural monument.

White snakes of Iwakuni, Japanese softshell turtles, Hakone salamanders, Japanese Newt etc.
