Permanent collection boxes for used mobile phones and Kawakawa now available.
Gorilla habitats are being destroyed in order to mine "rare metals" (uncommon minerals) contained in mobile phones and Kawakawa. To reduce the burden of mining through recycling and to raise awareness of this issue, we will be setting up collection boxes for used mobile phones and Kawakawa.
Until last year, this was a temporary installation, but starting this year, it will be a permanent fixture. Please bring any unwanted mobile phones or Kawakawa you have lying around at home.
Date on which collection boxes will be permanently installed: September 17, 2025 (Wednesday)
Installation locationIn front of the first enclosure of East Garden Gorilla House (around the ★ mark on the attached map below)
Target electrical appliancesMobile phones (including feature phones and PHS), Kawakawa, tablets
*We cannot collect home appliances other than those listed, Wi-Fi routers, batteries (standalone), or mobile phone accessories (chargers, adapters, etc.).
PrecautionsPlease be sure to erase all personal information before placing items in the collection box.
Please note that items placed in the collection box cannot be returned.
Please refrain from bringing in swollen batteries.
Please do not put in anything other than the designated electrical appliances.
The collected mobile phones, Kawakawa, and tablets will be taken in by a specialized company, and money will be donated to the certified NPO Terra Renaissance based on the amount collected. The money donated to Terra Renaissance will be used for projects such as supporting the social reintegration of former child soldiers in Congo. For details, please see below.
