Ueno Zoo At the "Animal Education Center", you can learn about the bodies and lives of animals by observing them closely in a hands-on classroom setting. Ueno ZOO School The first course will be held in the summer for elementary school students, followed by a course for junior high school students. Following the summer course for elementary school students, we are now recruiting participants for the junior high school course.

Theme and Content

"Let's make an animal feeder—and test it! Can we elicit behaviors closer to those in the wild?"

Wild animals naturally spend a lot of time searching for food and patrolling their territories. However, in zoos, they are provided with nutritious food and a safe environment, which can lead to less stimulation and sometimes boredom compared to life in the wild. Therefore, zoos try to evoke behaviors as close to those in the wild as possible, even in captivity, by devising ways to feed the animals and create their living spaces.

In this workshop, we will work in groups to create feeders designed to elicit the natural behaviors of wild animals. We will then use these feeders to actually feed animals and observe their behavior to verify their effectiveness.

Date and time: Sunday, March 1, 2026, 8:30-15:00
Target audience: 15 junior high school students (If there are many applicants, a lottery will be held.)
