From Mr. Kimio Honda

I've loved animals and drawing since I was a child. My illustrations were mainly pen drawings for printing, which I started in my teens, but I began watercolor painting in my mid-twenties. Most of my watercolors are for charity auctions or commissioned by others, so I only have a very small number of pieces left for myself. This is a rare opportunity to see almost all of those few original paintings.
Many of the animals depicted are unfamiliar, and many more are endangered. I hope you'll find them interesting and think, "I didn't know such animals existed!"

Profile of Kimio Honda

Born in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1958. Graduated from Keio University, Faculty of Commerce. A great zoo lover since childhood, he joined Tokyo Zoological Park Society 's Animal Lovers' Club (now: Tokyo Friends of the Zoo) in junior high school. He also has a strong interest in painting, photography, and graphic design, and began drawing with pen at the recommendation of Toshio Nishiyama. He has contributed illustrations and articles to the member magazine "Animals and Zoos" for over a quarter of a century since his student days. After working at Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd.'s Overseas Sales Department, DNP (America), Inc., and Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, he is currently the Studio Manager of the Exhibition Graphic Arts Department at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

Founded as the "New York Zoological Society" to establish the Bronx Zoo, it is the parent organization that manages both the zoo and the New York Aquarium. In addition, it is contracted to operate three other zoos in New York City, including the Central Park Zoo, and is also one of the world's largest environmental conservation NGOs, conducting conservation activities in 60 countries worldwide. Its exhibition graphic arts department is unparalleled among zoos worldwide in that it handles design, construction, and maintenance, from landscapes to signage.

"Art and the Zoo"

At Inokashira Park Zoo, we have used a portion of Sculpture Museum to display works by various artists in special exhibitions. We chose this theme to reflect our intention to continue holding exhibitions that connect art and the zoo.
