A physical examination of Xiang Xiang, Giant Panda born on June 12, 2017, was conducted around 8:35 AM on October 15, 2018, when she was 490 years old. Her weight was 34.8 kg, a decrease of 0.4 kg from 35.2 kg on October 5. Her body length was not measured.
The mother and cub (Shin Shin and Xiang Xiang) spend their days in the outdoor enclosure and their nights in indoor rooms 2 and 3.
Xiang Xiang is curious about all sorts of things around her, plays energetically, and is often seen playfully nuzzling her mother, Shin Shin. She also frequently uses the hammock in Indoor Room 2 to play and rest.
Xiang Xiang rests for about 13 to 15 hours a day, and spends the rest of the time being active or nursing, but her rhythm is not constant.
Up until now, it has often been seen chewing on the bamboo and dwarf bamboo that its mother is eating, and it eats sliced apples almost every day. Also, since around July 14th, it has started eating bamboo leaves, and recently it has been frequently seen eating bamboo stalks (the trunk-like parts of the bamboo).
The process of replacing baby teeth with permanent teeth is still ongoing, and we confirmed on September 24th that all four canine teeth have been replaced by permanent teeth.
Furthermore, they seem to like the new platform (which has been in use since September 29th) installed in the outdoor enclosure, and can often be seen resting on it or eating bamboo.
Although its weight has decreased slightly since the last measurement, its appetite and exercise levels are both good, and there are no health problems.
Shin Shin continues to be cared for, including being nursed about 4-5 times a day. Shin Shin eats bamboo, bamboo grass, apples, carrots, panda dumplings, and pellets well.
*As a general rule, Xiang Xiang's physical examinations are conducted on days ending in "5". *Announcements will be made on the website twice a month, on the day following a park closure.
