The goblin shark caught on Jan 17 2009 died in the morning on Jan 21 2009.
On January 17, 2009, Tokyo Sea Life Park aquariusts discovered and caught a male goblin shark (
Mitsukurina owstoni), 1.0m long at 230m deep in outer Tokyo Bay.
This is the fourth time we caught goblin sharks: April 1995, January 2007, April 2007, and this time, January 2009.
Goblin sharks have an elongated snout and their protrusive jaws, and are called ''living fossils,'' due to their similarities to pre-historic sharks ''Scapanorhyncus.'' They are so rare that little is known about their biology and ecology.
The shark is still alive and now exhibited in a tank at the aquarium.
