About Tama Zoo

Tama Zoological Park is one hour from central Tokyo by train, and is a unique zoological park where animals are exhibited under naturalistic habitats built on a vast 52 ha (129 acres). The zoo has three ecological zones (the Asiatic Zone, African Zone, and Australian Zone) and the Insectarium.

On the east side of the Asiatic Zone encounter animals from the wilds of Japan such as the Japanese macaque and Japanese giant flying squirrel. Discover animals from all over Asia such as the Sri Lankan elephant, Bornean orangutan, greater one-horned rhinoceros, Amur tiger, takin, and red panda on the west side of the Asiatic Zone.

In the Africa Zone watch giraffes and great white pelicans in a savannah-style exhibit (under construction). Then take a stroll to see the African bush elephant, chimpanzee, lion, and cheetah.

We also invite you to take a ride into the territory of a pride of lions on our lion bus! (Separate fee)

The Australia Zone is home to the koala, Tasmanian devil, kangaroo, emu, and a variety of marsupials.

The Australian Zone was constructed in 1984 to commemorate the twinning of Tokyo and the state of New South Wales, Australia. Since then koalas have always been exhibited at Tama Zoo. We are also part of the “Save the Tasmanian Devil” program and have been promoting awareness through the exhibit of Tasmanian devils since 2016.

Take a stroll with colorful butterflies that flutter about all year at Insectopia. Then visit the Insectarium Center and observe aquatic insects and insects from overseas such as the leaf-cutter ants and glow-worms.
