Within no more than two hours on a high speed ferry or about just half an hour by airplane from Tokyo, you are on Ohshima Island, the largest island of the Izu Islands. As a popular destination for Tokyo residents, it offers activities such as swimming, golf, cycling, and camping. |

| Ohshima is a vocanic island and a cone
called Mihara-yama stands in the center of the caldera.
Almost all the island is designated as a national park
for protection of rich wilderness. Ohshima Park Zoo is
located in the Ohshima Park, west of the island, where
you can visit the Camellia Garden and the Botanical Garden,
and enjoy camping and hiking. |

Ohshima Park Zoo has about 750 animals
of 65 different species. Ring-tailed lemurs and barbary
sheep are exhibited on the Monkey Hill, which was naturally
created by lava. Muntjacs, common peafowls and turkeys
range freely in the large park. |

| The zoo has been keeping and breeding endangered species such as Aldabra giant tortoises, Japanese wood pigeons, and Hawaiian geese. We have succeeded in breeding Japanese wood pigeons for the first time in Japan. |
